The Unconquered Fort

Posted by Bhaven (Mumbai, India) on 4 February 2007 in Architecture and Portfolio.

The Janjira Fort is situated near Murud, Maharashtra, India. The fort, which is completely surrounded by water, was constructed by Malik Ambar at the end of 17th century.

The fort couldn't be conquered by any of the kings of neighboring territories. Few highlights about why it remained unconquered:

1. The nearest coast is surrounded by mountains. So from land, one can see/attack fort only from few miles apart.

2. Even if, when one is few meters apart from the fort, he/she will not be able to see the main enterance.

3. A fort had 24x7 watch room, where soldiers used to monitor for any enemies. This watch room was constructed in such a way (using darkness and the upward inclination of windows) that enemies can't see that they are being watched.

There are many other reasons too, but for that you must personally visit the sea fort.

The photo was taken during my visit in Feb'07.
